I am just an upcoming designer/sketch artist with TOO many ideas in my head and on my sheets. There’s money to be made here, what do I have to do?
The first thing I would suggest you do is put together a portfolio of your designs so that you can easily show to possible contacts. A portfolio displays the sampling of work done by an artist, designer or illustrator. Having a great portfolio is very important for jump starting a career in fashion. Putting together a design portfolio is relatively easy, www.ehow.com does a great job guiding you through the creation process.
Next, try to network as much as possible because its sad to say, but in this industry, it’s not what you know it’s who you know. You can start by joining as many fashion design organizations as you can. Maybe start with the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), which is a non-profit trade association of America’s fashion and accessory designers. Also, check out the Apparel and Textile Industry Associations and Organizations website for a list of other industry organizations.
Lastly, attend as many local and out of town small fashion shows as possible, because the producers may be looking for designers for future shows, this will help to build your resume for bigger high budget productions! Actually, the Fashion Institute of New Orleans (FINO) is holding their benefit “Passion for Fashion” fashion show Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Ray’s Over the River from 6:30pm - 10:30pm. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. If you would like to buy tickets, please let me know.
Well, I hope this information has helped you in your quest to work in the fashion industry and beyond. Remember, my door, I mean, my email inbox is always open for any questions you may have!
Keep it CHIC, N.O.
